Outreach

The Outreach worker is also part of the Outreach team. Her role includes representing the interests of the adolescents with whom she is in contact with, in the organization of various activities and programs of the Outreach team.

Hypersexualization Outreach Worker

The outreach worker is present in various locations in Côte-des-Neiges. She mainly works in La Voie high school, but makes herself available to youth organizations in the neighborhood and walks in public spaces to provide assistance when needed.  She stays in touch with the community via her official Facebook page.

La Voie High-School

The outreach component of the Hypersexualization project is in collaboration with the La Voie high-school. Fanny, the outreach worker works at La Voie high-school several days a week to ensure a presence among the attending adolescents. Whether through listening, support, referral to community organizations, organizing activities and workshops, or simply through discussion, the outreach worker is a trusted resource for young girls. She organizes activities and group interventions, as well as provides support to young individuals in abusive, violent or exploitative situations who seek her help. In addition, she has the means to work with teachers and various intervention workers to provide services to young girls. This is a free, confidential and non-judgmental service.

The outreach worker aims to engage and learn about the teens in the borough: their ideas, needs, extracurricular activities, passions, etc. Her job is to represent the girls in the community and to promote their ideas to the community’s organizations. The outreach worker is present to address all issues, whether is has to do with school, neighborhood activities, amorous relationships, friendship, family or sexuality and to make referrals to neighborhood organizations that address these topics. She is also a person with whom adolescents can tackle difficult issues, including violence, sexual assault, drug use, hypersexualisation and health issues (eg . sexual health and STIs ).

With neighborhood organizations

The outreach worker is in collaboration with various youth organizations in the Côte-des-Neiges borough. The Hypersexualization Program is supported by the Table de Concertation Jeunesse Côte-des-Neiges and the outreach worker is in collaboration and partnership with the organizations of the Table Jeunesse. The partnership is reciprocal, in that the outreach worker can effectively refer youth toward these community organizations, who can in turn refer their members to the outreach worker or to other organisations she works with.

The outreach worker may therefore accompany the Hypersexualization Program Coordinator (** Put a hyperlink to Julie’s service offering) in workshops related to the prevention of hypersexualisation. In addition, the outreach worker can meet with teens who participate in community organizations or who participate in various activities, if a need is established.

Preventing hypesexualisation and sexual exploitation occurs through a multitude of interventions in everyday life and through discussion and action within the lives of adolescent girls. The outreach worker’s mandate encompasses both formal interventions and informal or group discussions. Several issues can be addressed, such as:

  • Healthy relationships
  • Confidence and empowerment
  • Family relationships and friendship
  • The issue of autonomy
  • Self-expression
  • Etc.
